My Progress...(8th November 2011)

In this first post of the blog I will write about my progress for the time that I have attended the Computing course at Bedford College. Coming to Bedford College has been really exciting for me for the last two years especially when I know that I am coming to learn something that I really like.
Since I have started I have learned quiet many things that I did not know before. The teachers has helped me answers some questions that I didn’t find answer to before. Now because I am here I hope that I will learn more and more about the work that involves IT and also improve my skills in it.
The course includes several subjects that we attend every week fallowing a time table. These subjects include:

Communication and Employability Skills & Work skills
CES  is a lesson that is there to teach us all about the Employability Skills we need to get a job and to work but also to be able to communicate effectively and improve our style of living. This lesson has helped me find out more things that I need to have when I look for a job and what the employers are looking for when they employ others. I have learned things that I did not know before and now I feel like I know more of the things that I have to know before looking for a job. I have also learned about appropriate methods of looking for a job and how to get ready for one too. In this lesson there is nothing that affects my learning and I think that I will have to focus always and finish work in time so that I can improve my skills and be focus on what’s being said so that I can learn more.
Functional Skills & ESOL
The Functional skills lessons are divided into two categories and those are: Functional Skills English and Functional Skills Maths. These two lessons are there to support us with the information we need to pass our Functional Skills exams. They are there to get us ready for the Functional Skills exams that we will have throughout the year. The Functional Skills exams are exams that have to be passed so we can get employed by companies. These days every company makes sure that the person that they employ has got a Pass in both Functional Skills exams. For speakers of other language there is a lesson called ESOL. This ESOL lesson can be replaced with the Functional English lesson if the student is a speaker of other language or if the English is not the first language. In my case I am attending ESOL which helps me as well as Functional Skills Maths. They prepare me for the exams and encourage me so that I will be confident when I walk into the exam room. I think that in order for me to pass these exams I will have to be always focused and revise to improve my skills.
Web Production
Web Design is all about learning how tags work, what they do and how to use them to create website pages. It also teaches us a bit about how information is transferred and received across the internet. This lesson is important for the ones that are likely to get a job involving web design in the future but it can also be useful for the ones that don’t, as they can gain a little bit of knowledge of how Web Production works. To be able to gain a good mark in this lesson students will have to make sure they do a little more research at home and in the spear time to find out more about how and where web pages are stored. This is something important that every web designer will have to know so that they get an idea of what effects their each step is going to take. So far I have learned many things that I did not know before and by focusing I will continue to do so until the end. I also learned a bit of how clients access a website on the server.
EDP (Event Driven Programming)
EDP is again a good lesson as well as the Web Production lesson. These two lessons involve almost the same style of learning. There are codes that I will have to be learnd so we are able to create programs and make them trigger different events and there are ways and other programs in which we can do all this. So far I have learned about the program that programmers use to develop programs and some basic stuff of how to create basic programs. This has turned to be quiet excited for me as I did not get the chance to create a program not knowing about anything I needed to do. This involves a lot of logic work and it can sometimes take us a lot of time when designing a program as the program might not come up the way users want it to. This means that a user will have to look between the codes that are already there and find mistakes; this can take a lot of time.
Computer System
This is one of the lessons that I enjoy the most as it involves the computer hardware which I really like. This lesson teaches me about all of the computer system and how it functions and this is something that I’ve always been looking forward to know for the last few months.  The only lesson that I really spend time to research about different things is Computer System. This lesson has helped me learn a lot of things for the weeks that I have been at Bedford College. There is nothing in this lesson that affects my learning and in fact it makes me feel more comfortable around computer every time. The only way I could improve my performance is to ask the teacher questions from time to time; questions that I might don’t find the answers to on the internet. It is a good way of learning something that I am not sure about. Every time I don’t understand something I ask the teacher straight away and this is something that I don’t really do in other lessons as I might not find them so interesting as this lesson and walk away with the thinking that I might find the answer of my question on the internet.
Troubleshooting and Repair
This is another good lesson that is improving my skills in knowing how to find and fix a computer problem. In this lesson I usually learn about how and why some of the computer problems take place. It helps me a lot to find answers to many of my questions that I had in the past and to make it easier for myself I sometimes ask the teachers questions not related to the day topic after lesson finishes. So far I have improved some of my skills but I know that there are some more to come so I stay focus and listen to everything the teacher is saying. The only way to improve my performances in this lesson is probably to do a little bit of a more practical work at home or at college to improve my skills in knowing the inside of computer and what it contains or look like when the case is opened.
ITQ (Information Technology Qualification)
This is of the simplest lesson that I have come across so far. The reason I say this is because we are given staff and exercises to complete that are usually basic.  This lesson teaches me how to connect computers and other devices to the computer effectively and also how to connect to the internet in a proper way. It takes us through the basics and the health and safety issues we have to be aware of when we do so. I think this is very important for some that threat the computers as toys because it can teach them a lesson and show them what can happen if the computer is not handled correctly. So far I have learned some of the health and safety issues that I have to be aware of when connecting computer stuff together. This is very useful to know as otherwise it can cause health problems to everyone that is involved in such work.
CCNA (Cisco Certified Network Associate)
This lesson is my favourite lesson and I enjoy it very much. I haven’t learned a lot of things so far but I am hoping to do so in the future. The reason I say it is my favourite lesson is because it involves networking which is something that I really like to deal with. I have learned a little since I started and because I want to know more and more I usually learn at home by login onto our academy website www.cisco.co.uk. I am willing and waiting to learn a lot more about networking in the future and to find this lesson the easiest and the best out of all. I can improve my performances by making sure that I do a little bit of practical work at home and college and also to make sure that I read and get more and more information and when I don’t understand something, to ask the teacher. Asking the teacher a question about something is something that I am doing and I sometimes do it after the class has finished. Getting to know some of the things that I didn’t know before are really exciting for me and will always be as the internet is the future.
As an overall performance of the ICT course I can say that I have improved my knowledge and some of my skills definitely. This course has helped me to find the answers of some of my questions that I asked myself long ago. Everything is going well and nothing is affecting my performance so far.
I feel very motivated and excited to carry on this course as I know I will improve my knowledge and ICT skills more and more every day. I like the IT work and everything related to it and this is the reason I have chosen to do this course at this level. No issues or anything like that has put me down for the time that I have attended and I hope this will continue to be until he end of the course.
To improve my skills and personal qualities I will have to revise and focus in the best way I can do and would be fun for me.  I would have to work against being a little lazy and start doing some work but I feel that this has improved now as I do something that I enjoy. Other weakness that I have and I fight is being able to concentrate for a lot of time so I have started to work on it and try to face it so I will get every information that has been said.
The only way in which I can improve my actual progress is maybe by revising and looking for more information while I am at home and also to provide each assignment with good detailed information. I have found out that if I do this it makes me research more and get deeper into a topic which makes me find out new things and improve my knowledge. Not doing this means that I will stick just to the basic information relaying on the class notes and what the teacher has said. I feel that if I want to know more about something I will have to go deeper into eat and research about it more. This is something that I have started doing and found out that I really help me. I will hope that I will continue to do it by focusing a lot on my assignments and handing everything over in time.
In conclusion, the time that I have spent at Bedford College and the different subjects that I have taken has helped me improve my knowledge and IT skills a lot. I hope that my knowledge level for the next 2 years will increase more.
